Originally developed for Samurai swords, Damascus steel was created to make blades that would be brittle enough to keep a sharp edge, yet flexible enough to prevent shattering in battle. Ancient artisans discovered that when a brittle steel and a flexible steel were folded and forged together over and over, the resulting metal had the benefits of both—strength and flexibility.
That folding and forging process also creates unique and beautiful patterns in the. material, which are revealed when it is exposed to acid. Because acid eats away at one of the steels faster than the other, a relief is created, giving Damascus steel its unmistakable look—and making it a beautiful symbol for a wedding ring: two things coming together to make something stronger and more beautiful than either could be on its own.
